Victoria Falls is one of those places that can be reduced too easily to a photograph: a wall of water, a cloud of mist, a rainbow suspended above the Zambezi.
But the Falls are better experienced when there is no need to rush from one viewpoint to another.
A slower visit to Livingstone begins by giving the landscape time to speak. Walk through the rainforest around the Falls and notice how the sound changes as you approach the gorge. Stand at the viewpoints for longer than the few minutes required to take a photograph. Watch the spray rise and disappear with the changing light.
Then step beyond the Falls.
Livingstone has its own rhythm, shaped by the Zambezi, its history and the communities that have made the town a gateway to one of Africa's great natural landmarks. Spend time in the town rather than treating it simply as a place to sleep between activities. Visit local restaurants and markets. Explore the area's museums and heritage sites. Talk to guides and craftspeople. Take an afternoon along the river without turning it into another item on an itinerary.
There is also something to be said for seeing the Zambezi when it is not performing for tourists. A quiet riverbank at sunset can offer a different understanding of the landscape from the dramatic roar of the Falls.
The modern tourism industry often encourages visitors to collect experiences: sunrise, safari, boat cruise, helicopter flight, sunset and dinner, all compressed into a few days.
Victoria Falls does not need that treatment.
Some places reward efficiency. Others reward attention.
The Falls are spectacular enough to justify the journey. But Livingstone becomes more interesting when the journey is allowed to slow down — when Victoria Falls stops being a destination to tick off a list and becomes a place to actually inhabit, if only for a few days.
The best photograph may still be the one you take.
But the better memory might be the hour you spent doing nothing at all.
