Bringing the counter into the ecosystem

Glance POS allows businesses to create multiple tills for different parts of an operation — from a main counter to a bar or takeaway window.

Staff can log into their till, open a shift with an opening float and process sales through that session. Managers can then see sales, cash movements and session history at till level.

The idea is straightforward: counter sales should not become a separate universe from the rest of the business.

A customer ordering online and someone buying at the counter should ultimately feed into the same business picture.

The payment problem

This becomes more important when you look at how Zambian businesses actually get paid.

Glance: Many food and hospitality businesses operate through several disconnected systems.

An order can come through WhatsApp, payment through mobile money, another customer pays cash, someone else uses a card machine, while menus and business records sit somewhere else.

At the end of the day, the owner still has to work out what was sold, how customers paid and where the money went.

Glance brings those activities together so businesses can manage their operations with less manual work and better visibility.

KSJ: Who is the platform built for?

Glance: We are building for a broad range of food and hospitality businesses — from small online food sellers operating from a phone to restaurants, cafés, bars, bakeries, hotels, lodges and businesses with several branches.

The idea is that a small business should be able to start with the tools it needs and still have a platform capable of supporting it as it grows.

KSJ: Why was POS an important addition?

Glance: Because businesses do not only sell online.

If a restaurant has a digital menu but its walk-in sales, cash and counter payments are being managed somewhere else, there is still a gap in the business record.

Glance POS brings the physical counter into the same ecosystem.

The menu, kitchen and sales records can work together instead of having online and counter operations running separately.

KSJ: What does that look like for a business with several outlets?

Glance: Each outlet can operate its own tills, staff and shifts while management retains visibility across the organisation.

A business can have Counter 1, Counter 2, Bar or Takeaway Window, for example.

Glance also places emphasis on verification.

Businesses go through KYC/KYB checks before being approved on the platform. The objective is to reduce fake stores and ensure that the person creating a business profile is authorised to represent it.

The platform also treats the menu as an operating tool rather than simply an online catalogue.

Businesses can update prices, add photos and customisations, schedule categories, highlight products, run promotions and maintain their branding.

Restaurants and hospitality businesses can also use QR codes for tables, rooms and other service points.

A customer at a restaurant table, hotel room or poolside area can scan, browse and order, while staff receive the location information needed to fulfil the order.

The bigger bet

There is a broader idea underneath the product.

Much of the business software available to growing companies is built around individual functions — accounting here, payments there, ordering somewhere else.

Glance is betting that hospitality businesses benefit from connecting those functions.
