A stolen phone can be an expensive problem even when the handset itself is replaceable.

For many people, the device now carries access to mobile money, banking applications, social-media accounts, customer contacts, work, private information and, increasingly, their digital identity.

When that phone disappears — or when a SIM, account or online identity is compromised — the problem can quickly become much bigger than replacing a device.

It is this gap that Zambian entrepreneur Karen Moyo is trying to address through Privify Technologies, an early-stage technology company developing a digital protection and recovery system for people and businesses.

The idea is relatively simple: when so much of a person's financial and personal life is connected to one device, there should be a simpler way to protect it when something goes wrong.

The idea behind Privify

Moyo's route into technology is unconventional.

She is not a computer science graduate and did not begin her career in the technology industry. Her professional background is in immigration consultancy.

But she says she had long been interested in how technology could solve practical problems.

The idea for Privify emerged from observing how deeply smartphones had become embedded in everyday life.

A phone can now function as a wallet, office, customer database, communication centre, identity-document folder and gateway to financial services.

That concentration of information and access creates a new vulnerability.

“If that phone is stolen, a SIM is compromised, or someone gains access to an important account, the problem can go far beyond losing a device,” Moyo says.

Users can lose access to money, business accounts, customers, private information and online identities.

Her question was why protecting all of this had to be so complicated for an ordinary user.

“That question became Privify.”

Beyond cybersecurity

Privify's proposition goes beyond conventional cybersecurity tools.

Many security products are designed primarily around preventing attacks. Moyo says Privify is also interested in the period after something has gone wrong.

Consider a small-business owner whose phone is stolen.

They may need to secure a mobile-money account, contact a bank, deal with a mobile-network operator, change passwords, recover social-media accounts and protect customer information.

For an individual user, the process can be just as complicated.

The challenge is not necessarily knowing that something is wrong. It is knowing what to do first.

Privify is being designed around that moment.

The company's objective is to help users identify risks, strengthen identity protection, take emergency action and recover more safely following a compromise.

Four layers of protection

The product is being developed around four main layers.

The first is Privify Guardian, a prevention layer designed to identify suspicious messages, links and other potentially high-risk activity.

The system is intended to detect patterns associated with scams, including fake PIN-reset requests, fraudulent promotions, phishing attempts and impersonation.

The second is Privify ID, which focuses on identity protection and verification.

The longer-term concept involves linking a user's verified identity with biometric and digital verification mechanisms. For certain high-risk activities, the company intends to incorporate additional checks such as liveness verification to help establish that the legitimate account holder is actually present.

The third component is Panic Mode.

This is designed for emergencies such as a stolen phone, suspected SIM compromise or account takeover.

The longer-term vision is for a user — or potentially a trusted recovery contact — to trigger an emergency response remotely.

Subject to partnerships and integrations, the system could eventually support actions such as revoking active sessions or initiating freeze and protection requests with participating financial and telecommunications services.

The fourth layer is the Digital Vault, which is intended to provide secure storage for sensitive information and support safer recovery when a user moves to a new device after a compromise.

Together, the four layers form the company's basic proposition:

Prevent the threat. Verify the person. Respond quickly. Recover safely.

Designing for a mobile-first Africa

One of the defining features of Privify's proposition is its focus on how technology is actually used in African markets.

The company is looking at an environment where smartphones interact with mobile money, USSD, banking applications, SIM-linked services, social media and increasingly digital businesses.

That means the company's concept of digital protection is broader than securing a password or a single device.

Moyo describes the objective as protecting the wider digital life connected to the phone.

That is particularly relevant as more people use their phones not only to communicate but to conduct economic activity.

For a trader, entrepreneur or small-business owner, the phone may be the primary connection to customers.

For a professional, it may hold work documents and communication.

For a creator, an online account can represent years of work and accumulated audiences.

And for many users, the phone is increasingly a gateway to financial services.

A compromise can therefore have consequences well beyond the technology itself.

Why build it in Zambia?

For Moyo, Zambia is not simply the location where Privify happens to have started.

It is part of the reason the problem became visible to her.

The country has experienced rapid adoption of mobile money, smartphones, digital banking and online services. But the processes for recovering from a digital incident can remain fragmented.

A user may have to deal with several service providers separately while trying to understand what has happened and prevent further losses.

Moyo believes this creates an opportunity for locally developed technology.

“We should not always wait for solutions to be imported from other markets,” she says, particularly when the way people use technology in Zambia and other African markets can be different.

Privify is starting in Zambia, but the ambition is regional.

Moyo identifies phone theft, scams, SIM-related risks, account takeovers and identity fraud as challenges that can affect users across Africa and other emerging digital markets.

From idea to MVP

Privify is still an early-stage company, but Moyo says it has moved beyond the conceptual stage.

The company has built an MVP and is currently testing and refining it.

Before developing the product, the team spoke to people who had experienced phone theft, account takeovers, mobile-money fraud, SIM-related risks, social-media compromise and loss of access to important digital accounts.

The conversations reinforced the need for a system focused not only on prevention but also on recovery.

People do not simply lose a device.

They can lose money, customers, work opportunities, private information and access to accounts that have become central to their lives.

The company has also begun testing willingness to pay.

In its initial conversations, five people said they would consider paying approximately K50 per month for the right kind of protection.

Moyo is clear that this should not yet be treated as paying-customer traction.

Instead, she sees it as an early signal that some users recognise value in having protection and assistance available when a digital emergency occurs.

The immediate priority is therefore validation: testing the MVP, listening to users, improving the experience and identifying which features solve the most important problems.

Who is Privify for?

The initial focus is on individual users who depend heavily on their phones for money, work, communication and identity.

That includes students, professionals, small-business owners, traders, creators and parents.

But the risk looks different for each group.

A student might be primarily concerned about private information or losing access to important accounts.

A small-business owner could be more concerned about customer contacts, payment access or a social-media page used to generate business.

For a creator, the account itself may represent years of work and an important source of income or influence.

Privify also sees a wider opportunity beyond individual subscriptions.

The company is exploring potential relationships with banks, fintechs, mobile-network operators, SMEs and other organisations whose customers increasingly rely on digital accounts.

That creates the possibility of a business model that goes beyond selling directly to individual users.

How Privify plans to make money

The company is exploring a freemium-to-premium model.

The idea is to make basic protection accessible while offering more advanced capabilities through a paid subscription.

For individual users, Privify is currently considering a premium price of around K50 per month.

Business pricing would likely be higher, reflecting the potentially greater financial and reputational cost of losing access to critical digital accounts.

The company is also considering a B2B2C model, working with banks, fintechs, mobile-network operators and other digital service providers.

That could eventually allow customers to access digital protection through services they already use and trust.

The challenge of building from outside technology

Moyo's journey also highlights the challenges faced by founders who enter technology from other professional fields.

She acknowledges that building Privify has required her to learn areas ranging from product architecture and cybersecurity concepts to user experience and the mechanics of running a technology company.

Finding the right technical people and partners has been particularly important.

Privify deals with identity, financial access, personal information and emergency situations — areas where trust is central to the product.

“Trust cannot be an afterthought,” Moyo says.

Funding and access to the right resources have also presented challenges.

But rather than waiting until every resource is available, she says she has continued building with what she has.

For Moyo, being a non-technical founder has also reinforced another lesson: a founder does not necessarily need to know everything personally.

What matters is understanding the problem deeply, continuing to learn, listening to users and finding the right people to help build the solution.

The bigger ambition

The long-term ambition is considerably larger than a cybersecurity application.

Moyo wants Privify to become an African digital trust infrastructure company.

That could eventually encompass identity protection, scam detection, emergency account protection, privacy, secure storage and digital recovery.

The company's four-layer model provides the starting framework: prevent, verify, respond and recover.

The broader vision is for Privify to operate alongside the digital services people already depend on.

Moyo sees the potential for the concept to extend beyond Zambia into markets such as Kenya and Nigeria, where mobile-first digital services are also becoming increasingly important.

The underlying idea is that digital trust should become part of the infrastructure of the digital economy rather than something users think about only after they have been attacked.

What Privify needs now

For the moment, however, the company is concentrating on the fundamentals of an early-stage startup.

That means testing the MVP, learning from users, refining the product and determining which features deliver genuine value.

Privify is also looking for technical, strategic and commercial partners in cybersecurity, fintech, mobile money, digital identity, banking, telecommunications, privacy, fraud prevention and product development.

Those relationships could ultimately be as important as the technology itself because the company's longer-term proposition depends on working alongside services that already control parts of a user's digital life.

For Moyo, the goal is not to build another app simply because there is room for another app.

It is to build a layer of protection around the increasingly valuable digital lives people are carrying in their pockets.

As she puts it, losing a phone or experiencing a digital attack should not automatically mean losing one's money, business, identity or dignity.

That is the problem Privify is now trying to solve from Zambia.

“A phone is no longer just a communication device”

KSJ: Karen, before we get into Privify, tell us a little about yourself. Your background isn't the conventional route into technology. How did you arrive here?

Karen Moyo: My path into technology is not the traditional one. I’m not a computer science graduate and I didn’t come from a conventional technology background. I’ve worked in immigration consultancy for years, but I’ve always been interested in technology and how it can solve practical problems.

Moyo: Privify is building a digital protection and recovery system for people and businesses in a mobile-first economy.

We are looking at what happens before, during and after digital threats such as scams, phone theft, SIM-related attacks, account takeover and identity compromise.

Today, when someone loses a phone or believes their accounts have been compromised, they may have to contact several different providers separately — a bank, mobile-money provider, mobile-network operator, social-media platform and others — while already dealing with the stress of the incident.

Our goal is to make that response simpler and more coordinated.

Privify is being designed to help users identify risks, strengthen identity protection, take emergency action and recover more safely after a compromise.

KSJ: Walk us through how Privify actually works. What are the main components of the system?

Moyo: A lot of cybersecurity products are focused on preventing an attack.

Prevention is important, but we are also interested in what happens when something has already gone wrong.

When someone's phone is stolen or an account is compromised, people are often stressed and don't know what to secure first or who they need to contact.

We want Privify to be built around that moment.

Instead of giving someone a long list of technical instructions, the experience should guide them through the most important actions as quickly and clearly as possible.

We are also designing around the way people actually use technology in African markets — mobile money, USSD, banking apps, SIM-linked services, smartphones, social media and increasingly digital businesses.

The idea is not simply to protect one password or one device.

It is to help protect the wider digital life connected to that device.

KSJ: Why did you decide to build this from Zambia?

Moyo: The problem became very clear to me in Zambia.

We have rapidly adopted mobile money, digital banking, smartphones and online services. But when something goes wrong, the recovery process can still be fragmented and stressful for an ordinary user.

More people are keeping money, business information, private content, customer relationships and identity information on their phones.

As digital dependence increases, protecting access to those things becomes increasingly important.

I also believe Zambia has the opportunity to build technology that solves African problems.

We should not always wait for solutions to be imported from other markets, particularly when the way people use technology here can be different.

Privify is starting in Zambia, but I don't see it as a Zambia-only company.

Phone theft, scams, SIM-related risks, account takeovers and identity fraud are problems that can affect people across Africa and other emerging digital markets.

KSJ: How far along is Privify? Have you actually validated the problem?

Moyo: Privify is still early-stage, but it is no longer just an idea.

We have built an MVP and are currently testing and refining it.

Before building, we spoke to people who had experienced phone theft, account takeovers, mobile-money fraud, SIM-related risks, social-media compromise and loss of access to important digital accounts.

Those conversations showed us that this is not only a cybersecurity problem.

It is also a problem of trust, speed and recovery.

People don't only lose a phone.

They can lose money, customers, work opportunities, private information and sometimes their dignity.

We heard stories from people whose mobile-money or banking funds were taken after their phones were stolen, as well as people whose social-media accounts were compromised and then used to target their contacts.

We also tested early willingness to pay.

In our initial conversations, five people said they would consider paying around K50 per month for the right kind of protection.

That is not yet paying-customer traction, but it gave us an early indication that people see value in having help available when a digital emergency happens.

There is also a broader opportunity with banks, fintechs, mobile-network operators, SMEs and other organisations that depend heavily on digital accounts.

Our longer-term model is therefore not limited to individual subscriptions.

We see potential for Privify to work alongside the services people and businesses already use.

KSJ: How do you plan to make money from the platform?

KSJ: What have been the biggest challenges in building Privify?

Moyo: Building a technology company without a traditional technology background has definitely been challenging.

I've had to learn things I never expected to learn — from product architecture and cybersecurity concepts to user experience and how technology businesses are actually built.

I've also had to find the right technical people and partners who can help turn the vision into a reliable product.

That is particularly important with Privify because we are dealing with identity, financial access, personal information and emergency situations.

Trust cannot be an afterthought.

Funding and access to the right resources have also been challenges.

But I've continued building with what I have rather than waiting until everything is perfect.

Being a non-technical founder has taught me that you don't have to know everything yourself.

You need to understand the problem deeply, keep learning, listen to users, ask the right questions and find the right people to help build the solution.

KSJ: Where do you want Privify to be in the next few years?

Moyo: I want Privify to become an African digital trust infrastructure company, not simply another cybersecurity app.

The four-layer model gives us a clear direction: help people avoid threats, strengthen identity, respond quickly when something goes wrong and recover safely afterwards.

I want someone in Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria or another African market to feel that there is a protection layer working alongside the digital services they depend on.

As more of our lives move onto our phones, digital trust will become increasingly important.

I want Privify to help people feel that losing a phone or experiencing a digital attack does not automatically mean losing their money, business, identity or dignity.

KSJ: What does Privify need at this stage? What are you looking for from the market?

Moyo: Right now, our priority is testing and improving the Privify MVP.

We want to learn from real users, refine the product experience, validate the features that matter most and understand what needs to improve before a wider rollout.

We are also looking for the right technical, strategic and commercial partners.

That includes people and organisations working in cybersecurity, fintech, mobile money, digital identity, banking, telecommunications, privacy, fraud prevention and product development.

Partnerships will be particularly important because Privify is designed to work around services people already rely on.

We want to build the right relationships and infrastructure so that, over time, Privify can move from an MVP into a system that genuinely helps people protect their money, identity, accounts and personal information.

KSJ: Finally, what would you say to potential customers, partners and investors who are watching what you are building?

Moyo: To potential customers, I would say that digital safety is no longer something we can treat as an afterthought.

Most of us carry a significant part of our financial and personal lives in our phones.

Protecting access to those things matters.

You shouldn't need to be a technology expert to know what to do when your phone is stolen, when a suspicious message arrives or when someone tries to take over your account.

Privify is being built to make those moments easier to navigate.

To investors and potential partners, I would say that Africa's digital economy is growing, and so is the need for stronger digital trust and recovery systems.

Mobile money, digital banking, online businesses, social platforms and smartphone services are becoming part of everyday life.

At the same time, users can still face fragmented processes when something goes wrong.

I am not trying to build another app simply for the sake of having an app.

I want to build a trusted layer that people and businesses can rely on when their digital lives are at risk.

That is the problem I want Privify to solve.
