10 Years of Green Safaris: A Decade of Purpose, Place and Preserving Individuality

&nbsp;Every evening between October and December, the forest at Kasanka National Park begins to move.As the sun drops, straw-coloured fruit bats emerge from the evergreen Mushitu forest in numbers that can reach millions, turning the sky above the trees into one of Zambia's most unusual wildlife spectacles.Everwild has confirmed that its semi-permanent bushcamp will operate during the 2026 bat migration season, from 25 October to 1 December, with approval from the Kasanka Trust and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).Preparations include repairs to the bat hides and maintenance of access infrastructure. The announcement follows changes to accommodation operations in the park, including the closure of Wasa Lodge for the 2026 season.<h3>A migration unlike any other</h3>Kasanka's annual gathering of straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) is among Africa's most unusual wildlife events.Up to an estimated 10 million bats can gather in a relatively small area of evergreen forest. The Kasanka Trust describes the seasonal colony as possibly the largest concentration of mammals known in the world.The scale becomes most apparent at sunset.As darkness approaches, bats begin leaving the forest to forage. What starts as a few animals quickly becomes a vast movement across the sky, with thousands and eventually millions heading into the surrounding woodland.Unlike the better-known migrations of wildebeest and other large mammals, Kasanka's migration happens above the forest rather than across open plains.There is also an important scientific question behind the spectacle: why do such enormous numbers converge on this particular site?Seasonal fruit availability is thought to be one factor. The bats also travel considerable distances beyond the park each night to feed, linking the roost to a much wider landscape.<h3>The landscape beyond the roost</h3>That wider range matters for conservation.The bats may spend the day concentrated in a relatively small section of forest, but their nightly movements take them beyond the park. Protecting the roost is therefore only one part of protecting the migration.Straw-coloured fruit bats also play important ecological roles as seed dispersers and pollinators. Their movements help connect different parts of the landscape and contribute to forest regeneration.Kasanka's bat season is therefore more than a wildlife spectacle. It is an example of how an apparently local natural event can depend on ecological conditions across a much larger area.<h3>More than the bats</h3>Kasanka's wildlife extends beyond the migration.The park contains miombo woodland, evergreen forest, wetlands, dambos and river systems, supporting a wide range of species. It is particularly notable for its population of sitatunga, a semi-aquatic antelope associated with its wetlands.The concentration of bats also attracts predators, including birds of prey, creating another layer of wildlife activity around the evening emergence.But it is the bats that give this period its distinctive character.For several weeks each year, millions of animals leave the forest at dusk in a movement that remains only partly understood.That combination of scale, ecological importance and scientific uncertainty is what makes Kasanka's migration worth watching.The 2026 season begins on 25 October.

Kasanka’s Million-Winged Sunset Returns for 2026

&nbsp;Three African wild dogs have travelled 4,126 kilometres across Zambia, setting a new record for mammal movement on the continent—and providing an unusual map of how wildlife still moves through a rapidly changing landscape.The three litter mates, known as the Mayukuyuku males, left their birth pack in Kafue National Park in mid-2025 in search of territory and mates.Over the next nine months, they moved east and north through landscapes around Kitwe and Ndola before continuing towards the Luangwa Valley.By April 2026, they had settled in a Game Management Area between South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks.The journey is also the longest recorded wild dog dispersal globally, according to research published by the Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP).What makes the journey significant is not simply its distance. The dogs crossed protected areas, settlements and heavily developed landscapes, showing that wildlife movement in Zambia extends well beyond national park boundaries.<h3>The danger between protected areas</h3>Tracking data shows that wild dogs tend to move quickly and in relatively straight lines when travelling through unfamiliar territory. Researchers say this resembles their response when escaping lions, suggesting that a survival behaviour developed around natural predators may also help them navigate human-dominated landscapes.But speed offers little protection against vehicles, livestock conflict, disease and wire snares.The dogs also face natural threats, including lions, crocodiles and rival packs.The previous long-distance record, set in 2021, ended tragically. Three female wild dogs from South Luangwa travelled more than 2,300 kilometres over 11 months, crossing farmland, settlements and an international border before all three were killed by a poaching snare.The latest research underlines how difficult dispersal can be. The ZCP says up to half of dispersing wild dogs may not survive naturally, with human pressures increasing the risks. Half of the long-distance movements tracked in the study ended with a wild dog dying in a wire snare.<h3>The conservation question</h3>The Mayukuyuku journey makes a straightforward point for conservation planning: protecting wildlife inside national parks is only part of the equation.Wild dogs need the wider landscape to disperse, establish new territories and find mates. That means the areas between major wildlife strongholds also need attention, particularly where animals encounter farms, settlements and roads.Reducing wire snaring, managing human-wildlife conflict and maintaining viable routes between wildlife areas are therefore central to giving dispersing animals a chance of survival.The three males have shown that a route between Kafue and the Luangwa Valley is still possible.The challenge now is keeping it possible.

Kafue Wild Dogs Break African Mammal Movement Record

The bush has not stopped moving at Mawimbi.Lions still walk through camp. Leopards continue to pass close to the lapa. Elephants gather at the water, while African wild dogs move through the park with their pups.That rhythm has continued following a fire that damaged the main guest area of Mawimbi Bush Camp in Kafue National Park on September 8.The fire broke out shortly before midnight in the camp's main guest area. No guests or staff were injured, and the team worked through the night until about 7:30am to contain it.The fire was restricted to the main area. Other buildings and the surrounding bush were protected.Mawimbi remains open to guests, with visitors currently being hosted in a second lapa area. The camp's kitchen and dining experience continue, while its main activities—including game drives, walking safaris and river trips—are operating as usual.The owners are now working with specialists to assess the damage and develop rebuilding plans. The intention is to have the main area rebuilt ahead of the next season, scheduled to open on April 1, 2027.For visitors, the experience remains centred on the landscape rather than the buildings.Recent sightings have included a pride of lions moving through camp, a leopard passing within about 30 metres of the lapa, and elephants bathing in a nearby dambo.One particularly notable sighting has been a pack of around 30 African wild dogs, including pups, playing alongside the roadside.These encounters illustrate what draws travellers to Kafue in the first place: the opportunity to experience wildlife in a vast, relatively wild landscape where the animals often set the pace.At Mawimbi, that experience has continued despite the loss of its main guest area.The fire has changed part of the camp, but for now, the wilderness around it carries on much as it always has.
